SUNY trustees approve interim ECC president
The State University of New York board of trustees on Thursday approved the appointment of William D. Reuter as interim president of Erie Community College.
Reuter, the college's chief administrative and financial officer for the past eight years, was made interim president by ECC's board of trustees in November, but the appointment needed formal approval from SUNY.
A search will be conducted to find a permanent successor for William J. Mariani, who stepped down at the end of the year after nine years as ECC president.
Applications available for state STAR program
Homeowners who qualify for a STAR school tax rebate check and have not gotten one yet have until Jan. 22 to file an application with the state Department of Taxation and Finance.
The application must be made by filing department form DTF-178. It is available at the department's Web site, www.nystax.gov, by calling toll-free (877) 678-2769, or at local assessors' offices. Applications must be certified by the local assessor before they can be sent to the Tax Department.
The STAR rebate program, which began last year, made homeowners eligible for a rebate on part of their school taxes if they received a basic or enhanced STAR exemption on their 2006-07 school tax bills.
Storm-damaged trails now under repair
Contractors have started cleaning up trails in Stiglmeier Park that were damaged in the October storm.
"I would anticipate next month opening up trails," said John J. Jaroszewski Jr., director of the parks division. "Weather is going to dictate everything."
He said as sections of trails are cleared of hanging limbs and other brush, they will be opened. The main roads in the park are open.
Jaroszewski asked visitors to stay off the trails that are closed or being picked up to ensure the safety of workers and park-goers.
