Lionell Thompson, a Buffalo boxer who is a nationally ranked light heavyweight, will meet Toronto's Jonathan Rego in the main event of the "Battle of Champions" amateur card, starting at 4 p.m. Jan. 20 at McKinley High School.

The fight will be a rematch for Rego and Thompson. The Canadian fighter won a split decision in last year's Nickel City Challenge.

Also on the card: Two-time New York Golden Glove champion Excell Holmes will take on Canadian super heavyweight Frankie Rill, and U.S. middleweight Nick Brinson will face Ontario champion Jerome Gabriel.

General admission tickets are $10 in advance, $15 the day of event, and ringside tickets are $25. They may be purchased at the Pearl Street Grill or online at


Julie Gehring, a Williamsville East student, finished first overall in the 14-15 age division of the Jack Shea Sprint Memorial Race last weekend at Lake Placid.

Speed skating races of 500 and 1,000 meters were held Saturday and Sunday on the long track outdoors. The 15-year-old finished second in both events Saturday and won both events Sunday.

The event is named for the former Olympian from Lake Placid.

HOCKEY: Holiday and Leisure rinks are accepting teams for the weekend division of the Molson Senior Hockey League. This new non-checking recreational league will play games on Saturday and Sunday nights. Games will begin on Feb. 25 and teams will play a 12-game schedule. Call 685-3660.
