Lillie B. Mitchell loved to cook both at home and on the job as a cook at Mattie's Restaurant, a landmark on Buffalo's East Side.
Mrs. Mitchell died Thursday in Erie County Medical Center. She was 79.
Born Lillie Alexander in Atlanta, she moved to Buffalo as a young adult and worked briefly worked at the Chevrolet plant on River Road in the Town of Tonawanda, where she met Roy A. Mitchell. The two married in the 1940s. He died in 1989.
Mrs. Mitchell worked as a cook in the homes of local families and later as a cook at Buffalo State College in the early 1980s. A few years later, she began working as a cook in Mattie's Restaurant.
Mrs. Mitchell was active in Antioch Baptist Church, where she a member of the usher board for 40 years, and served as treasurer for 25 years and worked with the church's missionary society.
In addition to her daughter Earlene, survivors include three sons, Roy A. Jr., Thomas R. and Royce, and another daughter, Paula Lewis.
Her funeral will be at noon Thursday in Antioch Church, 1327 Fillmore Ave.
