Town of Hamburg police have charged an Orchard Park man with driving while intoxicated after his pickup truck slammed through the outer brick wall and into the kitchen of a Clark Street home late Sunday.
Kenneth Wells, 43, also was charged with driving on the wrong side of the street.
The eastbound pickup, according to police reports, went off the right side of the road at about 10:40 p.m., crossed a lawn, struck a mailbox and then crossed the street before plowing through the wall at 4672 Clark St.
Neighbors reported hearing screeching tires and then a huge crash.
Gina DellaNeve, 19, and her father, Mark, went outside to see what had happened.
"My dad was actually talking to the guy," Gina DellaNeve said Monday. "He told my dad that he swerved to avoid a deer that was crossing the road."
Mark DellaNeve then went over to the pickup truck to turn off the ignition.
"The guy was just leaning on the truck, like he couldn't stand up," Gina DellaNeve said. "It seemed that he didn't know what had just happened."
Blood dripped from Wells' forehead.
He apparently suffered facial lacerations in the crash and was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Neighbors said the pickup slammed into the sink area of the kitchen and knocked down a wall of wooden cabinets.
The hole in the house was boarded up Monday, and the residents, the Wimpy family, were staying with friends, neighbors said.
