Coaches vs. Cancer benefit

Western New York basketball coaches are putting their best foot forward to help fight cancer. Following an example from NCAA coaches, coaches across the state will ditch their dress shoes and wear sneakers for games they coach in between Jan. 8-13.

"It's an awareness thing," said coach Al Monaco of Williamsville South, who is also president of the State Coaches Association. "I think it's a great idea for a great, worthy cause. Ever since [North Carolina State coach] Jim Valvano died, it's been a big thing . . . trying to give something back." Monaco said a jar will be available at each school for donations.
