Martha S. Scheu, active in community
July 4, 1921 -- Feb. 26, 2006

Martha S. Scheu, who was active with Buffalo social and cultural agencies, died Sunday in Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury nursing facility, Irvington, Va. She was 84.

She was the wife of Robert S., former president and chief executive officer of Marine Midland Bank of Western New York. They moved to Kilmarnock, Va., in 1985.

Born Martha Smith in East Aurora, she was a graduate of Emma Willard School and Bradford Junior College.

Mrs. Scheu was a past president of the Junior League of Buffalo, secretary of the Children's Aid Society, vice president of Child & Family Services and a director of Planned Parenthood and the Niagara Frontier Vocational Rehabilitation Center.

She also was a director of the Women's Board of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and was treasurer of the Members' Gallery and vice president of the Members' Council at Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons, Donald S. of Lancaster and Stephen E. of Tennessee; a daughter, Susan S. Woodworth of Massachusetts; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be private.
