The Hamburg School Board meeting in Armor Elementary School was interrupted for several minutes Tuesday after a fire alarm evacuated the Abbott Road building during the board's executive session.
The meeting continued in the nearby Administration Building after firefighters found a burned-out ballast in an overhead light. The board approved a number of new and updated policies.
They include an end to district-provided cellular phones. Superintendent Peter Roswell said he will collect about 18 phones from administration personnel.
Under the new policy, effective July 1, the district will give essential personnel a small stipend to purchase a phone.
Also, the student suspension policy was updated to clarify procedures for special education students. Under the new policy, such students found guilty during a superintendent hearing of an offense leading to suspension would undergo a follow-up hearing to determine if the offense was related to or caused by the disability.
