Bessie Redd of Buffalo, a retired teacher, died Thursday at home after a long illness. She was 70.
Born Bessie Ravena Lee Gilchrist in Greensboro, N.C., she lived in Buffalo for the past 60 years. She served as a nurse in the Air Force from 1954 to 1956 and received her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Buffalo.
Mrs. Redd worked in a variety of jobs from 1959 until becoming an English teacher in the Buffalo schools from 1977 until her retirement in 1990.
She enjoyed reading.
She is survived by a son, Steven T.; three sisters, Marylene Thompson, Margaret Meredith and Maxine Bennett; and two brothers, Robert and Johnny Gilchrist, all of Buffalo; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in H. Alfred Lewis Mortuary, 968 Jefferson Ave.
