Walter S. Herstek Jr. Nov. 5, 1942 -- Feb. 25, 2006

Walter S. Herstek Jr. of Sanborn, an accomplished mechanic, died Saturday in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a brief illness. He was 63.

Born in Niagara Falls, Mr. Herstek grew up in Wheatfield and was a 1962 graduate of Niagara-Wheatfield High School.

He worked as a diesel mechanic for Haseley Trucking Co. and for more than 20 years had worked for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority at Niagara Falls International Airport.

He was referred to by family and friends as "Mr. Fix-it."

Surviving are his wife of 27 years, the former Eileen Stephens; two daughters, Susan Turner of Houston and Cynthia Mehary of Niagara Falls; a son, Richard O'Hara of Ransomville; his father, Walter S. Sr. of Wheatfield; a brother, Albert of Wheatfield; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Rhoney Funeral Home, 5893 Hoover Road. Burial will be in North Ridge Cemetery, Cambria.
