Applications available for fall craft show

MIDDLEPORT -- Applications are available for the juried Middleport Holiday Craft Show.

The event, sponsored by Middleport United Methodist Church, will be held Oct. 28 in the Middleport Fire Hall.

Applications are due by June 1, and acceptance letters will be mailed in July. Applications can be obtained by calling 735-7631 or 735-7596.

The craft show, one of the oldest in the area, has featured a wide variety of items from jewelry to knitted goods and tinware to wooden crafts.

Hoyt's town meeting to focus on budget

Assemblyman Sam Hoyt, D-Buffalo, will hold his annual town meeting from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Polish Cadets hall, 927 Grant St. at Amherst Street.

The meeting will focus on Gov. George E. Pataki's 2006-07 budget and its effect on community programs and services in Western New York. Hoyt says comments from constituents will help guide him during budget negotiations.

"In an already complicated budgetary cycle, as this year's will undoubtedly be, your opinions, feedback and concerns will help me to better understand the specific needs of those within my district," Hoyt said.

State sheriffs institute to start membership drive

BATAVIA -- The New York State Sheriffs Association Institute will begin its annual membership drive in Genesee County within the next two weeks, according to Sheriff Gary T. Maha.

Financial support for the institute programs comes from honorary membership dues.

Free program offers Pre-Collegiate Studies

Erie Community College is offering a free Pre-Collegiate Studies Program.

The program -- intended for high school graduates, general education diploma qualifiers and adult learners -- is designed to teach reading, applied math and basic computer skills for the college level. Several workshops also will be offered.

Day and evening classes are offered at Ken-Ton Continuing/Community Education, Maryvale Community Education, ECC City Campus and Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education.

State Boating Course set April 1 and 8 in Batavia

BATAVIA -- A New York State Boating Course, sponsored by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, will be held on two consecutive Saturdays, April 1 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Genesee County Emergency Management Services Fire Training Center, 7690 State Street Road.

A permit is required by law for all boaters. Reservations may be made at the Sheriff's Department (585) 343-5000, Ext. 232.
