Swimming meet to fill 3,000 room-nights

When swimmers hit the pool for a tournament at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in downtown Buffalo next month, they'll make a positive financial splash for the local hospitality industry.

The Buffalo Niagara Convention and Visitors Bureau predicts the 2006 New York State YMCA Swimming Championships, which will take place March 17-19, will generate in excess of $600,000 in hotel, restaurant and other revenues.

The expected out-of-town contingent of some 1,300 athletes, plus coaches and families, will account for more than 3,000 room-nights, while also spinning off thousands of local restaurants meals and shopping trips.

The meet, sponsored by the Western New York YMCA Swim League, will consist of 90 separate events, with top swimmers qualifying for the Y's national swimming competitions.
