>Democrat exploring Giglio challenge

FRANKLINVILLE -- Cattaraugus County's former Democratic elections commissioner Richard O. Stevenson last week announced he is considering a run for the 149th Assembly District seat.

"My focus over the next few months will be to listen to the Southern Tier electorate, to really pay attention to what they are saying, to address many of the most important issues facing the state," he stated in the announcement.

Stevenson said he intends to form an exploratory committee to help him decide whether to challenge Republican Assemblyman Joseph Giglio, who took the seat after winning a special election last June. He added he will begin raising campaign money and will seek the backing of the Independence, Conservative and Working Families parties.

The 149th District seat, which has held by Republicans since the 1987 retirement of Assemblyman Daniel B. Walsh in 1987, covers Cattaraugus County and parts of Allegany and Chautauqua counties.
