Joseph P. Czerwinski, retired city worker
June 28, 1918 -- Feb. 16, 2006

Joseph P. Czerwinski of Buffalo, a retired mason for the City of Buffalo, died Thursday in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston. He was 87.

A member of Local 264, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, he worked for the city more than 25 years, retiring in the mid-1970s.

Though unable to serve in the military during World War II because of a medical condition, Mr. Czerwinski was a member of Adam Plewacki Post 799, American Legion.

He had received several citations for his outstanding service to the March of Dimes.

Known as "Joe Black" and "Broadway Joe," Mr. Czerwinski was one of the most active figures in Buffalo's Polonia community from the 1950s to the late 1970s.

He also worked on the election campaigns of several people running for city offices.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial was in St. Adalbert Cemetery, Lancaster.
