Trocaire student guilty of rape in restroom

Chris C. Fewell was convicted Friday afternoon of raping a fellow nursing student in a women's restroom at Trocaire College a year ago.

Jailed since his arrest two days after the attack, Fewell did not react as the jury announced its verdict to Erie County Judge Shirley Troutman. Fewell, 36, was convicted of first-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act.

The jury of seven men and five women deliberated about two hours after a weeklong trial.

Fewell, 36, also known as Chris Malik Sawyer, of South Park Avenue, Lackawanna, insisted during the trial that the woman had consensual sex with him last Feb. 26, but in a Trocaire computer lab, not a restroom.

Prosecutor Scott F. Riordan said he will urge Erie County District Attorney Frank J. Clark to seek the maximum 50-year prison term when Fewell is returned to court for sentencing May 3. The judge remanded him following the verdict.

The victim Wednesday identified Fewell as the man who raped her in a first-floor women's restroom at the college.
