In 1865, Columbia, S.C., burned as Confederates evacuated and Union forces moved in. It's not known which side set the fire. . . . In 1897, the forerunner of the National PTA, the National Congress of Mothers, was founded in Washington. . . . In 1904, Giacomo Puccini's opera "Madame Butterfly" was poorly received at its world premiere in Milan, Italy. . . . In 1964, the Supreme Court ruled that congressional districts within each state had to be roughly equal in population.

IN IRAQ -- Army Pvt. Edward S. Klee Jr., a 1996 graduate of Lackawanna High School, has been deployed to Camp Taji in Iraq. He is a cannon crew member regularly assigned to the 542nd Maintenance Company at Fort Campbell, Ky. His parents are Edward and Carol M. Klee of Blasdell.


YOUTH AWARDS -- The Town of Hamburg Youth Bureau is accepting nominations for this year's service to youth awards given in volunteer and professional categories for individuals who have shown a high degree of dedication to youth development.

Applications are available at the Youth Bureau in the Frontier Community Learning Center, 4540 Southwestern Blvd., or by calling 646-9406, Ext. 264. Winners will be honored at a banquet May 3.


DOORS OPEN at 10 a.m. March 4, in Delevan Fire Training Center on Route 16 for a silent auction to benefit Delevan United Methodist Church. Drawing time is 11:30. Refreshments will be available.
