John T. Bean Sr. of Buffalo, a retired Loblaws supervising manager, died Sunday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 83.
He worked for the Loblaws food chain from 1948 to 1988 and was named Employee of the Year in 1958.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Mr. Bean earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Buffalo. He was an Air Force veteran, rising to the rank of sergeant.
A member of Friendship Baptist Church and its usher board, he enjoyed Bible class and Sunday school.
Mr. Bean was also a member of St. John's Lodge 16, Free & Accepted Masons, and Bison Consistory 29, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and was a potentate of Hadji Temple 61, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.
His wife of 30 years, Susan Howard Bean, died in 1984. His second wife, Bernice Pace Bean, died in 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Spicer; a son, John Jr.; two stepdaughters, Karen Campbell and Cynthia Lanier; and two stepsons, Kenneth Perry and Bill Perry, all of Buffalo; a sister,
Ethel Jackson of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Thomas T. Edwards Funeral Home, 995 Genesee St. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn.
