FREE ASSISTANCE -- D'Youville College students in the Students in Free Enterprise program are once again offering free tax-return preparation help for people who cannot afford paid professional service.

The students are trained by the Internal Revenue Service and New York State Tax Department in the preparation of basic returns for low-income taxpayers. In 2005, students filed more than 350 returns, saving the taxpayers more than $50,000 in tax preparation fees and securing approximately $500,0000 in refunds.

The program also offers free help to people with special needs, including those with disabilities, and non-English speaking people as well as older taxpayers who file forms 1040EZ or the basic 1040 federal form. The free service is offered from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Business Development Center on the sixth floor of the Alt Building, 585 Prospect Ave.
