Gerald W. Carter Jr., a retired switchboard operator at Veterans Affairs Medical Center and former operator of several downtown snack stands, died unexpectedly Tuesday in his Buffalo home. He was 47.
Mr. Carter, nicknamed "Bear," was a counselor at Cradle Beach Camp for about 25 summers. Born blind, he had been a camper at Cradle Beach as a child.
A native of Buffalo, Mr. Carter graduated from the the state's Batavia School for the Blind and was a member of Calvary Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
He retired in 2005 after being injured in a fall.
Survivors include a sister, Deidre Fairley of Rougemont, N.C.; and two brothers, Duane and Steven, both of Buffalo.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Calvary Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 1007 Ellicott St. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
