William Conrad, retired fire lieutenant July 10, 1927 -- Feb. 8, 2006

A Mass of Christian Burial forWilliam Conrad, a retired lieutenant in the Buffalo Fire Department, will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 450 Abbott Road. Inurnment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Hamburg.

He died Wednesday in his South Buffalo home after a long bout with cancer. He was 78.

Mr. Conrad, a Buffalo native, attended South Park High School and served in the Navy during World War II.

He joined the Fire Department in 1951 and was stationed at Engine 8 on Chicago Street in the Old First Ward for most of his service. He retired in 1983 as acting captain of Engine 35.

Mr. Conrad was former president of the Blackthorn Club and the St. Thomas Aquinas Holy Name Society. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus; Post 721, American Legion; and the South Buffalo Democratic Party for many years.

Surviving are his wife, the former Ann McNaughton; two daughters, Laura of Purcellville, Va., and Marie of the Village of Lancaster; two sons, William Jr. of Alexandria, Va., and James of Buffalo; and seven grandchil-
