Advisory committee set to work on budget

The Akron Central School District's Budget Advisory Committee is preparing to tackle the 2006-07 budget when it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the middle school media center.

District Treasurer Cynthia M. Tretter on Thursday said that the budget process is under way and that individuals from all segments of the community are coming together to review in detail the preliminary budget information.

"I'm really proud of the process," she said. "There's a great deal of information, and I try to organize it in such a way that people really understand what we're doing, how we do it and why we do it."

Last week, Superintendent Ronald G. DeCarli and Tretter explained the budget process to the advisory committee.

"There has to be a vision," DeCarli said. "We try to stay in the future, taking a look at where we are and where we want to be in five years."

Traditionally, the district's budget development begins in October, when administrators and program managers are asked to assemble fiscal requests for their respective areas after seeking advice and input from staff members.

This year, the district developed the budget based on the action steps of a strategic plan.

"It is in this way that we ensure that we stay on course with the strategic direction of the district," Tretter said.

She noted that presentations by various administrators and department heads took place at Board of Education workshop meetings during November and December.

Preliminary revenue estimates were presented to the School Board during its January workshop. The board prepared a preliminary budget for the advisory committee that will be reviewed and analyzed during the next two months.

The School Board and advisory committee will meet in a joint session March 22 to adopt a budget that will be presented to the community May 9. Voting on the budget is from noon to 9 p.m. May 16 in the high school.
