Roman Ayala, Golden Gloves boxer, cobbler Feb. 28, 1914 -- Feb. 7, 2006

A Mass of Christian Burial for Roman Ayala will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Annunciation Catholic Church, Lafayette Avenue and Greenwood Place, after prayers at 8:30 in Lombardo Funeral Home, 473 Niagara St.

Mr. Ayala died Tuesday in Sisters Hospital after a brief illness. He was 91.

Born in Santuce, Puerto Rico, he operated a cobbler shop in New York City from the 1950s to 1970, when he retired and moved to Buffalo.

Mr. Ayala enjoyed fishing. As a youth, he boxed under the name Kid Canelo and won a Golden Gloves title.

Survivors include a daughter, Julia Latalladi of Buffalo; a sister, Maria Luisa Villagos Ayala of Puerto Rico; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
