Driver charged in rape of impaired Evans woman
A Gowanda man who is a driver for We Care Transportation was arrested Wednesday on multiple charges that he raped a mentally challenged woman, Gowanda police said.
Scott A. Dieter, 44, of Center Street, was arraigned in Persia Town Court and taken to Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Dieter is accused of having sexual contact with the Town of Evans woman on several occasions. He was assigned as a driver of the bus contracted to transport mentally challenged individuals to various locations, police said.
Dieter was charged with three counts of rape, three counts of criminal sexual act and sexual abuse. He was immediately suspended from his job.
Drug possession charge lodged against Island man
A Grand Island man was arrested Wednesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
State troopers who were assisting a disabled vehicle in Lewiston on Jan. 26 said a passenger, Tyron V. Cowart of Centre Court, had cocaine on him.
Cowart, arrested on a warrant Wednesday, was arraigned in Lewiston Town Court. He is being held in Niagara County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail pending another court appearance Wednesday.
Ex-legislative aide gets jail for forged petitions
Stephen J. Hicks, a former legislative aide for the Erie County Legislature's Democratic Party majority, was taken from court in handcuffs Wednesday after a judge rebuked him for "besmirching the integrity of our political system while young Americans are dying in Iraq so they can have free elections."
State Supreme Court Justice Joseph S. Forma sentenced Hicks, of Durham Avenue, to 60 days in jail and three years' probation for misdemeanor violations of state election law for circulating forged nominating petitions.
Forma denounced Hicks for "a lifetime permeated by fraud and theft," including two prior theft-related convictions and a 1995 welfare fraud plea.
Hicks will spend about 40 days in the County Correctional Facility in Alden, court officials said .
He was convicted of forging petitions he circulated in June 2004 for unsuccessful congressional candidate Fran Cartonia, who was not accused of any misconduct.
Hicks was fired as a legislative aide to Erie County Legislator Demone Smith after a county grand jury indicted him on felony and misdemeanor charges.
Ontario man arrested in two cottage break-ins
FORT ERIE, Ont. -- A London, Ont., man who broke into two cottages Wednesday morning was caught in the act, Niagara Regional Police said.
Daniel Davison, 19, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering with intent, two counts of breaching probation and one count of possessing a controlled substance.
Police said they discovered a smashed window at a Maple Leaf Avenue cottage and followed footprints in the snow to a second cottage, where a window was opened. Inside, they found Davison, who had a small quantity of narcotics, police said.
