Police responding to a report of three shots fired on Florida Street at midday Tuesday made a grisly discovery -- the body of a 20-year-old Buffalo man lying faceup in the middle of the street.
"He was found dead," said Detective Sgt. Daniel Figueroa. "We're still questioning witnesses."
Members of the young man's family identified him as De'Mar "Antrone" Sellers, who recently moved in with his aunt on Florida Street across from Horace Johnson Park. "He just called me," Sellers' cousin Shanisha Johnson cried as she stared at her cell phone in disbelief.
"It can't be him," she kept repeating as she wandered in a state of shock.
Police said they had no leads about the 12:32 p.m. shooting.
Sellers' family said that he had had his share of scrapes with the law but seemed on the verge of turning his life around.
"He's been having discipline problems," said Charles Jones, Sellers' stepfather, who raised him since he was 2.
Records show that Sellers was arrested twice in 2004, once for allegedly pointing a gun at four people, including a 13-year-old boy, and then for leading police on a car chase in a stolen vehicle.
"But he was trying to get it together," Jones said as he prepared to take Lutricia Jones, his wife and Sellers' mother, to the morgue to identify the body. "He was starting to go to church."
