>Woman is hit by car trying to flag it down

ASHFORD -- A Springville woman suffered a broken leg and injuries to her back after she was struck by a vehicle late Monday while trying to flag it down for assistance along Route 219 in Ashford, Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies reported.

Patricia J. Kingland, 29, was trying to get help for a third vehicle, which was in the ditch when she was struck by the 2005 Toyota driven by Yu Chung Chang, 27, of Flickinger Court, Amherst, at about 10 p.m.

Deputies said Chang applied his brakes on the snow-covered road and attempted to get around Kingland's van. He tried slowing down when he saw her coming toward his car but struck her, police said.
