LOCKPORT -- A Shunpike Road man was sentenced to a year in jail Tuesday by Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza for violating probation in a child sexual abuse case.

Keith R. Swartzlander, 19, served six months in 2004 on his guilty plea for aggravated second-degree sexual abuse. He had 4 1/2 years left on probation after that, but violated the conditions. The molestation of a 4-year-old girl occurred May 12, 2004, in Swartzlander's home, authorities said.

JAMESTOWN -- Six people are homeless following an early morning fire Tuesday caused by a lighted candle in an apartment house on Fairmount Avenue.

Jamestown firefighters were called to 57 Fairmount Ave., about 3:30 a.m.

City Fire Battalion Chief James Winchester said a fire was burning on the front porch of the three-story building and extending up into the attic.

Winchester says one tenant suffered minor burns and a minor laceration.
