DAMN YANKEES: Amherst High School, 4301 Main St., Snyder, will present the musical "Damn Yankees" at 9:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets range from $3 to $10. For reservations, call 362-8345.

BRIGADOON: Lancaster Senior High School will present the musical "Brigadoon" at 8 p.m. Feb. 16 to 18 with a 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday in the school auditorium, 1 Forton Drive. Tickets are $9 evenings, $7 for Saturday matinee. Tickets are available at box office up to and including nights of performances or call 686-3352 during school hours.

'SOUND OF MUSIC': Williamsville South High School will present "The Sound of Music" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $8 and are being sold in the school library.

WOODSON ESSAY CONTEST: The deadline is Friday for this year's Carter G. Woodson Essay Contest for young people in grades 4 to 12. Essays (200 to 500 words) must be about an African-American youth (living or deceased) who made a contribution to Western New York in school, church, family or community. Mail to Carter G. Woodson Essay Contest, P.O. Box 63, Buffalo, N.Y. 14207 or leave at the Frank E. Merriweather Junior Branch Library at Jefferson and East Utica. Remember your name, address, telephone number, school and grade must be written on your essay.

RAY OF LIGHT NOMINEES: The YWCA of Western New York is seeking nominations for its Ray of Light Award, honoring young women age 14 to 18 for academics, sports, arts and personal achievement. All nominees will be invited to participate in a leadership conference and awards brunch and winners in the four categories will be given an award and a $600 scholarship check. ESSAY CONTEST: McKinley High School invites students in grades five through high school to participate in essay contests on the theme: "Mission Impossible: Preserving Our History, Our Health, Our Heroes and Our Legacy" as part of its upcoming annual conference on African and African-American History and American Diversity. Participants may obtain entry forms at Buffalo public schools or by visiting www.buffaloschools.org and clicking on the link on the home page. The essay deadline is Feb. 20.

KIDS WHO CARE: Kohl's is offering a "Kids Who Care" scholarship program that will recognize volunteers, age 6 to 18, who have made a difference in their community. Nominations will be accepted through March 15, and must be submitted by an adult. Find forms at Kohl's stores or at www.kohlscorporation.com (go to "community relations" and choose the top link). Nominations must be returned to a participating store in person or by mail. Store winners get a $50 gift certificate and compete for regional scholarships worth $1,000. Regional winners compete for $5,000 scholarships.

APPRENTICE NIGHT: The Williamsville South entrepreneurship class will hold an "apprentice night" with games, food and Valentine items for sale from 4:30 to 8:30 tonight at the McDonald's at 4987 Transit Road, Williamsville. Part of the proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
