Kathryn Baxter, retired Cheektowaga teacher

A memorial service for Kathryn E. "Kay" Baxter, a retired Cheektowaga teacher, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 1088 Brighton Road at Fries Road, Town of Tonawanda. Burial was in Wildwood Cemetery, Salamanca.

Miss Baxter died Dec. 3 in Olean General Hospital after a brief illness. She was 88.

Born in Ischua, she moved to Buffalo and graduated from Lafayette High School and Buffalo State College.

She started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in New Albion before taking a job in Cheektowaga, where she taught eighth-grade history. She retired in the early 1980s after a 40-year career.

Miss Baxter, an avid reader, lived in the Buffalo area for most of her life. In recent years, she lived in Olean.

Surviving is a sister, Patricia Ward of Salamanca.
