Joann Merritt, taught at Christian school

A memorial service for Joann Merritt of Warsaw, who was retired from teaching at a local Christian school, will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church, 8445 Greiner Road, Clarence.

Mrs. Merritt died Monday in Roswell Park Cancer Institute after a brief illness. She was 63.

Born Joann Elkins in Buffalo, she graduated from Orchard Park High School and had a teaching certificate from Hilbert College.

Mrs. Merritt taught at West Seneca Christian School from 1974 to 1981.

She also was a foster parent for more than nine years.

Mrs. Merritt was a dog lover and volunteered to teach English as a second language to immigrants from China.

Survivors include her husband of 17 years, John H. Jr.; two sons, Russell Baun of Holland and Scott Baun of Orchard Park; a brother, Keith Elkins of Endicott; and seven grandchildren.
