Youth faces DWI charge after crash in Java

JAVA -- A Holland teen faces drunken driving charges in Wyoming County after he lost control of his vehicle early Thursday and crashed into a ditch here, according to Wyoming County sheriff's deputies.

Ryan P. McCutcheon, 17, was traveling on Sanders Hill Road from Lefort Road about 4:40 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the ditch, deputies said.

Police charged McCutcheon with driving while intoxicated.

McCutcheon was released to a parent pending a court hearing to be held at a later date.


Father charged with DWI at children's school

PENDLETON -- A father of three Starpoint School District pupils was stopped from taking his children home by office staff and charged with driving while intoxicated by Niagara County sheriff's deputies.

Staff said the man was slurring his speech and having a difficult time standing when he came to the elementary school on Mapleton Road at 3:24 p.m. Tuesday to pick up two daughters. He already had picked up another daughter at the intermediate school.

Deputies said they found a nearly empty bottle of vodka and numerous empty beer cans in the car of Wayne Lee Spencer, 40, of Mapleton Road.

He was taken to Niagara County Jail and a relative was contacted to pick up the girls, authorities said.


Sears worker pursues, nabs shoplifting suspect

WHEATFIELD -- A Niagara Falls Boulevard woman was charged with shoplifting at The Summit on Wednesday.

An employee of Sears Roebuck & Co. told Niagara County sheriff's deputies that about 5:48 p.m. he tried to stop a woman from leaving the store with three bottles of cologne, valued at $192.

He said she elbowed him in the eye and ran to her car. The employee said he pursued her and was able to detain her until deputies arrived. Danielle L. Leighton, 24, was arraigned in Wheatfield Town Court, where bail was set at $500 cash or $1,000 property.


Driver in speeding case also faces DWI charge

A 22-year-old man was charged with drunken driving Wednesday night after police found him speeding along Kensington Avenue while his driver's license was suspended for an alcohol-related charge, police reported.

Zachary M. Frazer of Bird Avenue was charged with driving while intoxicated and speeding, according to police, who said he also was wanted on an arrest warrant in the City of Tonawanda.

Northeast District Lt. John King observed a car headed east on Kensington, driving about 40 mph in a 30 mph zone about 11:40 p.m., police said

Frazer registered a 0.11 percent reading on a Breathalyzer test, police said, and King arrested him at the scene.
