Farm Bureau donates $500 to feed veterans in need
As part of national Food Check-Out Week, the Erie County Farm Bureau Thursday presented a check for $500 to Veterans Affairs Western New York Healthcare System to buy food vouchers for veterans in need.
"As food producers, we are concerned that some Americans cannot afford to buy the food they need," said Hans Mobius, Farm Bureau representative. "But we are proud of the role New York State farmers play in making our food supply more affordable for all."
Farm bureaus across the country mark this week as the time when most Americans have earned enough disposable income to pay for all the food they will eat, both at home and away, for the entire year.
Americans spend 9.5 percent of their disposable income for food, down from 12 percent in 1983, according to the American Farm Bureau.
