Seneca Nation marks opening of health center

The Seneca Nation of Indians on Thursday celebrated the grand opening of the Seneca Nation Community Health and Wellness Center at the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation.

A modern, multistory structure, it was built to house prediabetes and diabetes prevention programs, an exercise facility and nutrition and dietary counseling services along with other health-related programs, according to Seneca President Barry E. Snyder Sr.

The purpose of the facility, Seneca officials said, is to promote healthy and active lifestyles for members of the nation.

Red Cross chapter gets new director

WELLSVILLE -- The Allegany County American Red Cross chapter has a new executive director -- and a new AmeriCorps volunteer.

Madeline Gasdik of Wellsville has been named executive director, succeeding Jodi Bailey of Wellsville, who is now a marketing official at Alfred University.

Gasdik most recently worked for Allegany ARC as administrative services director. She holds a bachelor's degree from Houghton College and is a Wellsville High School graduate.

Arthur W. Couchman of Scio, who retired last year after 26 years as a state trooper, is the volunteer now dealing with the chapter's response to the state Emergency Preparedness Project.

Couchman's daughter Theresa is also an AmeriCorps volunteer in the county with Literacy Volunteers.

Couchman's most recent work as a trooper was as senior firearms instructor and in-service training instructor at Troop A headquarters in Batavia. Most of his career was as a road trooper in Allegany County.
