John Kotz, retired owner of an insurance agency, died Wednesday in his Depew home after a lengthy illness. He was 88.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Kotz was a graduate of Depew High School and Bryant & Stratton Business Institute. He owned John Kotz Insurance in Depew from 1958 to 1991, when he retired. Before that, he was president and business agent for Local 848, United Auto Workers.
Mr. Kotz was a charter member of the Depew Lions Club and a recipient of its Distinguished Service Award. He was former chairman of the Independent Progressive Party of Depew and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Polish Falcons and Fraternal Order of Eagles.
A softball standout, he was inducted into the Western New York Softball Hall of Fame in 1951.
His wife of 61 years, Alfreda Przywara Kotz, died in 2002.
Survivors include two daughters, Darlene Platter of Depew and Sharon Bobak of Lancaster; a son, John A. of Elma; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Augustine Catholic Church, 425 Penora St., Depew. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
