I thought Mary Jo Monnin's article on Lancaster track coach Kevin Carriero was absolutely wonderful. As a Lancaster High School alumnus and former athlete of coach Carriero, it is great to read that he is doing very well.
Mr. C is not only an excellent coach and teacher, he is a very special person. He has touched the lives of countless numbers of track and field athletes, football players and students during his years of coaching and teaching at Lancaster. He keeps in touch with many of his former athletes. After I graduated from high school, coach Carriero was sure to make it to watch a couple of my college races at UB. He did the same for many of his other former high school athletes.
The one thing that always stood out to me about coach C was the fact that he never, ever played favorites with his athletes. His favorite athletes were the hardest workers, and he really enjoyed working with every athlete, regardless of the talent level. He had a way of making everyone feel special about their performances, whether it was someone breaking a sectional record or someone running a mile without stopping for the first time in gym class. And like the article stated, Mr. C could motivate better than any coach I ever met. He certainly pushed me and so many other athletes to find our limits, and then surpass them.
It really doesn't surprise me that he has beaten cancer. If anyone could do it, it certainly is him. I'm sure I speak on behalf of all his former athletes in saying congratulations and best wishes.
