A 39-year-old man pleaded not guilty Saturday to two murder counts in the death of a woman whose body was found in her bedroom after she missed a tennis date, authorities said.
Douglas Herrera of Spring Valley entered the pleas to first- and second-degree murder in the death of Mary Nagle, 42, of New City, police said.
Nagle's sister called police Friday morning and reported she had gone to check on Nagle, who had not shown up for tennis, and found blood on the floor, leading to the bedroom. Police found the body sprawled across the bed, face down and partially naked, said Rockland Medical Examiner Lone Thanning. She said Nagle was cut and beaten.
Nagle's sister told police she had seen a man in painter's clothes on the property when she arrived. Using her description and a helicopter, police found Herrera about a mile away at 2:40 p.m.
