A 54-year-old man was being held Saturday in the Monroe County Jail in connection with a 1986 slaying in Florida.
George McCloud was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Sharon McWhorter, 23, a part-time janitor whose naked body was found dumped behind a middle school in March 1986. She had been strangled, authorities said.
McCloud, who knew the woman, was a suspect at the time of her death, officials said. However, there was not enough evidence to charge him.
McCloud moved to New York State in December to live with relatives after being released from a Florida prison, where he served time on drug and burglary charges, according to the Democrat & Chronicle newspaper.
The 1986 case was reopened three years ago after hairs at the crime scene matched a DNA sample taken from McCloud. He was indicted last week by a grand jury and will be returned to Florida to face the murder charge.
