St. Bonaventure women's basketball coach Jim Crowley and assistant Scott Young have been placed on administrative leave pending a review of allegations made by another employee, the university announced Saturday.
The coaches will remain on leave until the completion of the review, Sister Margaret Carney, St. Bonaventure's president, said in a statement. Carney said the review is a routine procedure in such matters and does not indicate guilt.
"We have a situation in which an employee of the university has indicated that her work environment is not a comfortable one for her," Carney said. "We have a responsibility to take her claims seriously -- and we do."
Steve Mest, Bona sports information director, stressed to The News that the allegations have been made by a university employee and not a student-athlete.
Carney said senior university officials acted promptly upon learning of the allegations. Athletic Director Ron Zwierlein and Frank E. "Skip" Saal, provost and vice president for academic affairs, both suggested the employee engage the university's advocacy officer system, which is specifically designed to address such allegations.
The university's statement stated that senior administration officials have met with members of the women's basketball team, explained the situation to them and answered their questions.
"I am committed to a safe, healthy and professionally rewarding environment for all individuals," said Carney, "just as I am committed to a fair and just review of these allegations. We will act carefully and decisively in addressing this matter."
The Bonnies are 44-96 in Crowley's five seasons. Bona went 9-19, including a 4-12 mark in the Atlantic 10, in 2004-2005. The Bonnies lost in the first round of the A-10 tournament.
Crowley was a Bona assistant for four years before becoming head coach, and Young has been his assistant the last five years. Bona's coaching staff also consists of assistants Marti Whitmore and Beth Huston. Whitmore has been an assistant for three years; she was the Bonnies' head coach from 1993-2000, the last four seasons with Crowley as an assistant. Huston has been with the program for one year.
