WILL. SOUTH RALLIES; W.S. EAST NOW 10-0

Williamsville South had been averaging 13 runs per game, but on Friday the Billies needed a 7th-inning rally to beat Tonawanda, 6-5, in ECIC III baseball.

Trailing, 5-3, Shane Hurley, up from junior varsity, hit a sacrifice fly to short right field to score Derek Fogarty with the tying run. Brandon Baty followed with a line drive up the middle to score C.J. Ahrens with the winner. Joe LaPenna pitched two innings of hitless relief with two K's and doubled a runner off. South finishes the first round of league play 6-0.

Justin Nowak had a 3-run homer in top of the sixth with Dan Harris and Nick Coronado aboard to give Maryvale an 8-4 win over Cheektowaga. . . . Cody Gernatt had the winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh for Springville in a 5-4 win over Starpoint. ECIC II: In a battle of undefeated teams, Jess Howard scattered five hits as West Seneca East (10-0) turned back Williamsville East, 12-4. The Flames fall to 9-1-1, 4-1. . . . Doug DelBello drove in three runs with a homer and triple as Hamburg beat Iroquois, 5-1.

ECIC I: Down to their final out, Alex Hopkins doubled to score a pair of runs as Sweet Home scored all its runs in the seventh and beat Lancaster, 3-2. . . . James Piazza threw a three-hitter with 12 K's for Williamsville North in a 3-0 win over Orchard Park. Adam Durfee drove in two runs and Rob Gronkowski added an RBI for the Spartans. . . . Jim Corsaro homered and Nick Finnegan added two hits for Frontier in a 9-8 win over West Seneca West.

ECIC IV: Tommy Klein knocked in the winning run in the sixth as Eden survived East Aurora, 7-6. Winning pitcher Justin Klein had three hits and Charlie Karstedt drove in two for the Raiders (5-0).

Monsignor Martin: Brian Wolf struck out 15 for Canisius in a 4-1 win over St. Francis. Dan Scime and Tom Durante each had two hits.

Niagara Frontier: Grand Island rallied in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 3-2 win over North Tonawanda.

Niagara-Orleans League: Ed Baker had a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give Wilson a 5-4 win over Roy-Hart. . . . Barker rallied for three runs in the seventh for an 8-7 win over Newfane. . . . Alex Misiti and Adam White combined on a three-hit shutout as Medina defeated Akron, 9-0.

CCIAC I: Mike Morganti scored the winning run on an overthrow as Southwestern edged Dunkirk, 10-9. . . . Abe Rack and Tom Lutz combined on a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts in Fredonia's 3-2 win over Allegany-Limestone.

CCIAC II: Dominic Borello struck out seven as Silver Creek cruised past Cattaraugus/Little Valley, 17-3.

Cornell Cup: Theo Alger drove in Paul Guadadno with the game-winner as Hutch-Tech beat South Park, 8-5.

Softball

Niagara Frontier League: In a battle for first place, Andrea Cornelius struck out four and allowed only three hits as Niagara-Wheatfield dropped Kenmore West, 3-2. Kyrstin Lekki had a two-run double in the fourth that provided the margin of victory. . . . Shannon Wilson drove in two runs to pace North Tonawanda, 5-2, over Grand Island. Melissa Worth went 2 for 4. . . . Shannon Nolan drove in three runs on three hits as Kenmore East earned a 17-4 win over Lew-Port. . . . Amanda Thompson fanned 10 and didn't walk a batter as Kelly Goodwin scored the only run in Niagara Falls' 1-0 win over Lockport.

ECIC I: Brittany Lis scored on a sacrifice to give Lancaster a 1-0 win over Jamestown in 10.

ECIC II: Andrea Sauers' RBI triple plated the go-ahead run in the fifth as Iroquois got past Amherst, 5-3.

ECIC IV: Eden's Laura Agle pitched a one-hitter with 12 K's to earn her first shutout, 5-0, over Lackawanna.

Niagara-Orleans League: Jen Biernacki homered in the fifth as Medina edged Akron, 2-1. . . . Cortney Krueger drove in three runs to pace Wilson over Roy-Hart, 10-2. . . . Melissa Moore struck out nine a 10-2 win for Barker over Newfane.

CCIAC I: Molly Fogerty had two doubles among her three hits for Fredonia in a 12-1 win over Allegany-Limestone. . . . Alysha Baker had three of her team's 14 hits as Dunkirk dominated Southwestern, 18-1.

CCIAC II: Alicia Morley fanned nine as Cassadaga Valley beat Maple Grove, 10-2.

CCIAC III: Amanda Hilbert drove in four runs as Pine Valley nipped Forestville, 6-5.

Cattaraugus III: Dakota Colf had four hits as West Valley beat Walsh, 11-6.

Thompson Trophy: Emily Zuchlewski had 14 strikeouts as City Honors (6-0) remained the league's only undefeated team with an 11-6 win over McKinley. . . . Kelsey Speckt and Meg Bona combined on a 1-hitter as Hutch-Tech moved to 7-1 with a 13-0 win over Lafayette. . . . Keona Gaddis had three hits as Emerson downed Burgard, 19-5. . . . Erica Ortolano had a two-run homer among her five hits to lead Riverside past Seneca, 17-7. . . . Leanne Deering had three hits while Rhiannon Wanderlick added a two-run home run for Buffalo Arts in a 12-9 win over daVinci. . . . Pitcher Emily Hart fielded a line drive back to her and doubled a player off third to end the game as South Park beat Grover Cleveland, 14-3.
