James R. Shields of Gulfport, Miss., a Navy veteran and retired Buffalo firefighter, died Tuesday in a Mississippi nursing home after a long illness. He was 74.
Mr. Shields was a lifelong Buffalo resident until moving to Gulfport six years ago. He spent eight years in the Navy and was a Buffalo firefighter from 1959 until his retirement in 1978.
Former president of the Buffalo Fire Historical Society and a member of the Humane Society of South Mississippi, he was an outdoorsman and hunting safety instructor.
His wife, the former Mary Fiorillo, died in September.
He is survived by his son, James of Buffalo; a daughter, Jan Regan of Gulfport, Miss.; three sisters, Norma Scholland of Corfu, Joan Mau of Massena and Lillian Schwartz, of Depew; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services for Mr. Shields, and for his late wife, will be held at 11 a.m. May 14 in Hillside Cemetery, Corfu.
