OPENING BASS PRO DOWNTOWN WON'T REVIVE LOCAL ECONOMY

Do our illustrious city and county officials really believe that a sporting goods store such as Bass Pro will turn the area's economy around? Granted, this city has great potential, but that potential has not been put to good use. Until we develop the waterfront like Toronto, Baltimore and New York, we can't expect fishermen to want to come to Buffalo. We should have a pier, miles of shoreline shops, boating, lake tours, restaurants and night spots. We should have done something with the land where the steel mills were long ago.

We have a convention center that was obsolete the day the doors were opened. We should have free parking for visitors. Our football stadium should be downtown. We should have a new, state-of-the-art Philharmonic hall in the heart of the city.

What kind of jobs will Bass Pro bring? How much money can a cashier make? How much money can a manager of the lure department make? Come back to earth and stop dreaming. Better yet, these officials should step down and bring in a visionary who is results-oriented.
