GARDEN NOTES/ NEWS FROM AREA CLUBS

The African Violet & Gesneriad Society of Western New York will hold its annual show and sale this weekend at the Walden Galleria. See award-winning plants and buy some for your own home from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The club will sell both plants and leaves of named varieties.

The application deadline for the 11th Annual Garden Walk is Saturday. The Garden Walk, July 30 and 31, features gardens open for public touring in the Elmwood, Allentown, Kleinhans and near West Side areas. Call the information line at 879-0123 or click on www.gardenwalkbuffalo.com.

The Bowmansville Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Bowmansville Fire Hall. A hands-on workshop, "Hand-painted Flower Pots," will be led by Barbara Wiedemer and Katy Kwiatkowski. Members should bring a clean pot.

Amana Garden Club of West Seneca will host a spring cleanup at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Charles E. Burchfield Nature & Art Center, West Seneca.

The Willow Ridge Garden Club will hold its annual friendship night/membership tea at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion United Church of Christ, 15 Koenig Circle, Tonawanda. Mary Lou Chamberlain, a member of the Youngstown Garden Club, will present a flower-arranging demonstration. Guests and new members welcome.

The Williamsville Garden Club will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bassett Manor, Williamsville, for a program on constructing May baskets for table arrangements.

The Orchard Park Garden Club will meet at noon Thursday at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church 4369 South Buffalo St., Orchard Park. Following the business meeting, Mary Guntler, from Lockwood's Greenhouses in Hamburg, will present a program on planting herbs in home gardens and cooking with them.

The Botanical Gardens is offering a "Coleus Trimming" workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. May 7 and a "Tree Identification in South Park" outing from 1 to 3 p.m. May 15. Registration deadline is Saturday; $10 for members per event, $15 for nonmembers.

The Gardens' horticulture series workshops, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, continues with "Water Gardens" (May 9); "Shrubs, Birds and Butterflies" (May 16), and "Container Gardening" (May 23). Fee is $10 per session, due two weeks before class. Call 827-1584 or visit www.buffalogardens.com".

The Forest Stream Garden Club will hold "Through the Garden Gate," its biennial spring luncheon, silent auction and boutique at 11:30 a.m. May 7 at Fox Valley Country Club. Tickets are $19 and are available through Jeanine O'Neil at 636-6041.

The deadline is May 16 for paid dinner reservations for the Great Garden Plant Sale Dinner and Auction on May 20 at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens; $10 per person. Dinner is at 6 p.m. Auction begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Call 827-1584.

The Gardens Society is planning a trip May 27 to "The Garden as Art Flower Show 2005," at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. The North Tonawanda History Museum is sponsoring its first annual citywide Historic Gardens Contest. Neighborhood groups, civic organizations, businesses and individuals are invited to participate. May 30 is the deadline to enter the Town of Tonawanda Treasure Spots Garden Tour, Aug. 6 and 7. Check the town's Web site at www.tonawanda.ny.us for additional information.
