When I read the letter about outsourcing the Department of Motor Vehicles, I had two immediate thoughts. The first was that after a lot of experience with outsourcing, I wouldn't want to go to an outsourced DMV. Convenience and outsourcing don't go together, as far as I can tell.
The second was how much more convenient getting a new license and registration was here compared with getting just a renewal in my home state of Virginia. When my wife got her license, she arrived at the DMV in the morning, hours before it opened, to find the parking lot full and a line around the building. I brought her lunch at noon after convincing one of the armed police officers guarding the doors that I wasn't trying to cut in line. Finally, at 4 p.m., she was finished. That's a full workday.
When we left, there was still a line around the building and they were starting to turn people away. We should count our blessings.
