MAN SOUGHT IN SLAYING APPREHENDED AT AIRPORT

An Ontario man wanted in a California slaying was apprehended at Buffalo Niagara International Airport this week before he could board a flight bound for the West Coast.

Four Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority officers arrested Paul W. Mazzei, 45, of Beamsville, Ont., on Monday before he boarded a flight headed to Las Vegas and Oakland.

NFTA Detective Kevin Schilling and Officers Michael Full, Michael Bielanin and David Drozdiel arrested Mazzei on a California warrant in connection with the killing of a man earlier this year, authorities said.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that police in Solano County had been looking for Mazzei since Saturday, when they recovered a decomposed body, believed to be that of a retired 63-year-old Internal Revenue Service employee, from the side yard of his home. Mazzei reportedly had been the man's house guest.

George Gast of the federal Transportation Security Administration here alerted NFTA police after receiving a tip from the FBI about Mazzei's travel plans.
