ON THIS DAY -- In 1785, American naturalist and artist John James Audubon was born in Haiti. . . . In 1865, John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, was surrounded by federal troops near Bowling Green, Va., and killed. . . . In 1986, the world's worst nuclear accident occurred at the Chernobyl plant in the Soviet Union. An explosion and fire killed at least 31 people and sent radioactivity into the atmosphere. . . .

A FUND-RAISER to help Breanne Sterner of Youngstown defray mounting medical costs will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Elks Lodge, 1805 Factory Outlet Blvd., Niagara Falls. Donations of $20 will be collected at the door.

Sterner, 21, a professional cheerleader who has been active in supporting local and national charities, recently was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

RITA AUERBACH of Kenmore, an award-winning watercolorist, will demonstrate her art at a meeting of the Lancaster-
Depew Twin Village Art Society at 7 p.m. Monday upstairs in the Lancaster Municipal Building, Broadway and Central Avenue.

Auerbach, a faculty member of the Chautauqua Institution Summer Studies who is known nationally for her painting techniques, has published articles in Watercolor and American Artist magazines.

Her distinctive watercolors have been exhibited in Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Castellani Art Museum, Art Dialogue, Big Orbit and Brian Art Gallery. The meeting is free and open to the public, according to Alice Dobrowolski of Depew, publicity chairwoman. Refreshments will be served. . . .

REUNION NOTE -- Members of the Sacred Heart Academy Class of 1945 will hold a reunion June 4 in Williamsville, according to Joan Lucas Keohane of Angola, a member of the committee planning the event.

She said that the class had 93 members. She said MaryAnn Locke Reed of Clearwater, Fla., the class president, sent word she will attend the 60-year bash and that another classmate may be coming from the Washington State. . . .

LEXOPHILIA TIME -- According to to a bulletin board item spotted by Olaf, "A bicycle can't stand alone because it is two-tired." Think that's bad, read this one: "A backward poet writes inverse." Stay tuned. . . .
