HALL REPLACES HEINEMAN ON LEGISLATURE

Former Alfred Mayor William Hall was sworn in as an Allegany County legislator Monday.

Hall, who was recommended by the Republican County Committee and the Legislature's Ways and Means Committee, replaces Robert Heineman of Alfred, who resigned effective March 30. Heineman had served since 1995.

Hall served in Alfred government for 14 years -- seven of them as mayor, said Legislator Brent Reynolds, R-Alfred, who endorsed his candidacy.

An Alfred University professor, Hall teaches rural justice.

The Legislature on Monday also authorized the Public Works Department to seek a state grant to address gas emitted by the county's landfill. The application for funds to build a gas management system will be submitted to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

In other matters:

Gretchen Szuch, the county recycling coordinator in the Department of Public Works, was named employee of the month. The Legislature authorized the Department of Public Works to proceed with work on two bridge projects: $141,000 to replace the Truax Road bridge over Dyke Creek in the Town of Wellsville and $661,600 for the rehabilitation of the East Hill Road bridge over the Genesee River in Caneadea. The federal government will fund 80 percent of the projects' cost.

The Legislature adopted the county's hazard mitigation plan, which was established in the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000.
