Eyelash freedom ...
Former televangelist Tammy Faye Messner says losing her trademark eyelashes during her struggle with cancer was a liberating experience.
"I realized I wasn't just eyelashes," said Tammy Faye, adding she glued on false ones. "A person is more than just what you look like on the outside."
Messner was diagnosed with colon cancer nearly a decade ago and last year announced that the disease has spread to her lungs. Messner undergoes cancer scans every three months. "Don't let fear rule your life," she said. "Live one day at a time, and never be afraid."
Messner was a celebrity judge for a beauty pageant last week in Lancaster, S.C., where men dressed as women to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Chan in action ...
Action film star Jackie Chan visited Vietnam for the first time as a United Nations goodwill ambassador, promoting HIV/AIDS awareness in the communist nation where health experts warn infection rates are on the verge of exploding.
Chan, 51, visited a communal health center as well as a support group session for family members caring for loved ones with HIV/AIDS in northern Quang Ninh province, which has some of Vietnam's highest infection rates.
As Chan strolled down the street last week wearing a blue UNICEF shirt with a red AIDS pin, children on bikes chased after him, calling out his name in Vietnamese and greeting him with "Chao Bac," or "Hello Uncle."
"Wear a helmet. You have to keep safe," he told them.
He stressed the importance of eliminating discrimination and social stigma attached to AIDS. "Twenty years ago, I'm the one who was scared about HIV ... but from the education I learned that's wrong," he said. "Otherwise, (victims) cannot go to work, they cannot go to school and they would be hiding in their houses."
Nuptials for John ...
Elton John intends to marry his long-term partner David Furnish some time this year or next, his publicist said Monday.
The singer told the Mirror tabloid that he and Furnish wanted to hold a civil partnership ceremony in Windsor, near London, in mid-December, although publicist Gary Farrow said John had said it might not happen until next year. "He (John) said that it may be by Christmas and it may be next year," Farrow told Reuters.
John, 58, and Furnish, 42, have been partners for more than 11 years. A Web site recently speculated the couple was splitting up, prompting Furnish to say that they had "never been happier." John told the Mirror that Furnish should not expect many of the trappings of a regular marriage. "There will be no honeymoon. I'm on tour," he said.
Farrow said one of John's main motivations for going ahead with the ceremony was financial. Civil partnerships between gay couples will be allowed in Britain starting Dec. 5 and will give partners tax breaks available to married couples.
Life imitates fantasy ...
Teri Hatcher has a lot in common with her character, Susan, on ABC's "Desperate Housewives," and she's getting more like her every day.
Both are divorced and raising a daughter, and Hatcher tells InStyle magazine in its May issue she's becoming a klutz, too. "I think I'm absorbing Susan," she says.
While leaving the hair salon one recent rainy day, Hatcher dug into her purse to tip the valet. But her money wasn't in a wallet, and a wind gust scattered ones, twenties and hundreds across the parking lot. She scooped up as much wet cash as she could, then went home and dried it with a hair dryer. "Of course my money is not all neatly put into a wallet, because I'm a mom and I don't have time to do that," she tells the magazine.
Like Susan, she's also cautious about is dating. "But it doesn't consume me," the 40-year-old actress says.
