A Buffalo woman pleaded guilty last week to stealing $5,470 from an Amherst gynecologist and pocketing almost $11,000 from books she stole from libraries in the community.
Sarah Kabel, 27, of Greenfield Street, pleaded guilty before State Supreme Court Justice Mario J. Rossetti to grand larceny and scheme to defraud charges. Prosecutors said the crimes occurred between May 2003 and last June.
Kabel was not forced to disclose what she did with the money.
Candace K. Vogel, a financial crimes prosecutor with the Erie County district attorney's office, said Kabel bilked the gynecologist while she worked for him as a bookkeeper. She was fired last year, Vogel added.
Vogel also said Kabel stole more than 100 medical books from the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System and libraries at the University at Buffalo and Erie Community College, then resold them to local bookstores over the past two years.
Officials of the Buffalo and Erie County library system alerted law enforcement agencies to the problem, Vogel said.
Kabel remains free without bail pending her July 19 sentencing.
Rossetti said Kabel will likely be forced to make restitution and receive five years probation.
