A Long Island mother passed malaria on to her fetus in the first known case in the state and only the fifth in the country in five years, doctors said.
The baby was born without complications last April but was admitted to Nassau University Medical Center at seven weeks because of a mild fever. Five days after he was discharged, he was brought back unimproved and tested positive for malarial parasites.
The case was reported in Friday's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a publication of the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The mother, a Guatemalan immigrant who came to the state in 2003, later said she had been diagnosed with malaria in her native country.
