BYSTANDER'S CONDITION IS DOWNGRADED

The condition of Amber Keller -- the bystander who was wounded in a gunbattle between a Buffalo police officer and a convicted felon April 7 -- remained in critical condition Saturday, hospital officials said.

Keller had been originally listed in critical condition in the Erie County Medical Center immediately after the shooting, but was upgraded to serious condition several days ago. Since then, her condition apparently has worsened.

The 20-year-old Cheektowaga woman was shot in the head.

Officer Thomas P. English fired about four shots while returning fire from Mario J. Pittman, a convicted gun felon, during the incident on Genesee Street, near the Cheektowaga border, Buffalo police said.

Keller was staying with a friend who lives on Genesee when she was wounded. Police suspect she was hit by one of the officer's bullets that went through the home's window.
