Strawberries, rhubarb and asparagus, oh my -- a Savoring Spring progressive dinner will be held May 13 downtown at Ultimate Restaurants.
Dinner begins at 7 p.m. in the Bacchus Wine Bar & Restaurant with spring-inspired appetizers and cocktails. Taxi service will be provided to the next destination, City Grill, where each guest will enjoy a spring salad with soft-shell crab and veal entree.
And then it's off (by Metro Rail) to the Ya Ya Bayou Brewhouse for strawberry shortcake and after-dinner drinks. The cost is $55 per person, not including tax and tip. Call City Grill at 856-2651 for reservations.
A special visit to the Niagara Wine Trail USA is planned for May 14 and 15. Each participant will receive a special wine tasting glass that can be used at four of the wineries: Niagara Landing, 4434 Van Dusen Road, Cambria; Warm Lake Estate, 3868 Lower Mountain Road, Cambria; Vizcarrra Vineyards at Becker Farms, 3760 Quaker Road, Gasport; and Marjim Manor, 7171 Lake Road, Appleton. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Call 731-5900 for more information and a brochure.
Across the way
"The Other Niagara" is how the April issue of Gourmet magazine described the wineries and farms across the border in Ontario. Toronto resident James Chatto wrote about familiar culinary destinations such as the Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery in St. Catharines, Hillebrand Estates Winery Restaurant and Peller Estates in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and On the Twenty, Jordan and Vineland Estates in Vineland. The article includes some nice pictures and a map that inexplicably indicates Rochester but overlooks Buffalo.
