ON THIS DAY -- In 1864, Congress authorized the use of the phrase "In God We Trust" on U.S. coins. . . . In 1970, millions of Americans concerned about the environment observed the first "Earth Day." . . . In 1983, the West German news magazine Stern announced the discovery of 60 volumes of diaries purportedly written by Adolf Hitler. But they were a hoax. . . .

INDUCTION -- Vincent A. Tobia, counsel for the Buffalo Bills football team from 1987 until his death in 1999, will be among five men honored at the St. Joseph Collegiate Institute Alumni Association's 22nd annual Signum Fidei Society Induction Banquet Saturday at Brookfield Country Club. Other honorees include William Fitzhenry, Class of 1945; Stephen R. Robshaw, Class of 1962; Dr. Frank B. Perillo, Class of 1969, and Robert J. Schreck, Class of 1973.

Tobia, a member of the Class of 1957, served in the Army from 1958 to 1960, including 14 months in Korea, and then joined the State Police in 1962. He earned many commendations for his work on undercover narcotics and organized crime investigations, several homicide cases, for rescuing a victim from a car wreck and a horse-racing corruption case. He also was part of the State Police assault team that stormed the Attica State Correctional Facility on Sept. 13, 1971, to put down a convict uprising.

During his 20 years in the State Police, he found time to get an associate of applied science degree from Erie Community College in 1968, a bachelor of science degree from Buffalo State College in 1970 and a law degree from the University of Buffalo in 1974. . . .

IN TURKEY -- Senior Airman Edward J. Augustyniak, who graduated from Niagara Catholic High School in Niagara Falls in 2000, is on duty at Incirlik Air Base, Adana, Turkey. A communications-computer systems operations journeyman, he is assigned to the 39th Communications Squadron. He is the son of Joseph and Vivian R. Augustyniak of Niagara Falls. . . .
